According to a recent report, decentralized science (DeSci) is poised for significant growth in 2025, fueled by functional memecoins. report By MV Global.

DeSci involves integrating blockchain technology into scientific research. It aims to revolutionize the traditional scientific ecosystem by increasing transparency, decentralization and collaboration.

The report emphasized that while such a concept is nothing new, the focus and scope of these initiatives have evolved. Initially, most projects focused on funding research through decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).

Notable examples include VitaDAO, HairDAO, and AxonDAO, which continue to be influential players in the DeSci space. However, the sector has become significantly more diverse since then.

The report highlights approximately 30 active projects with various use cases including research funding, health data management, and open source research initiatives. stated that this diversity reflects the growing maturity and adaptability of the DeSci ecosystem.

DeSci aims to foster a more inclusive and equitable scientific ecosystem that empowers researchers and communities to collaborate and innovate without the constraints of centralized institutions.

The report pointed to a trend in 2024: the emergence of DeSci's own memecoin.

While most have had limited success, two projects, Rifampicin and Urolithin A, have gained significant traction, achieving market capitalizations of approximately $73 million and $59 million, respectively.

These tokens are launched through the Pump.Science platform and are more useful than traditional memecoins based on MV Global's evaluations.

These tokens are directly associated with scientific experiments, representing specific compounds or interventions tested on organisms such as worms, flies, and mice. These tokens act as funding mechanisms for research, provide real-time updates on experimental progress, and facilitate trading based on research results.

Holders of these tokens can even sell the rights to successful interventions, creating a tangible connection between token ownership and real-world scientific advances.

MV Global is targeting significant scale for Pump.Science in 2025, predicting at least 10 projects whose market value will exceed $100 million by the end of the year.

DeSci perspective

MV Global also predicted that health data management and collaborative open source research will also see significant growth in 2025.

Projects like Hippocrat, which empowers people to control their own health data, and ResearchCoin, which aims to create a “GitHub for scientific research,” show promise. Both are expected to reach a market value of at least $200 million by 2025.

The report also predicts a significant increase in DeSci projects, with at least 50 projects expected to be listed by the end of 2025. This growth shows positive market sentiments and increased liquidity in this sector.
